mental health awareness week

It is Mental Health Awareness Week this week (8-14 May); an important time in promoting a better understanding of how people can be affected by mental illness. It is an issue that is becoming more recognised, thanks in part to the increased coverage of mental health issues in the media. Prince Harry being praised for admitting he needed counselling following the death of his mother, was a particularly notable example.

The traditional British ‘stiff upper lip’ was for a long time seen as a positive attribute, but now it seems that people are coming around to the idea that sharing problems and concerns may be a healthier approach.

Everyone has challenges in their life at one point or another, whether an illness, something work and finance related, or a personal issue. Most people don’t want to discuss these issues with colleagues, even if it is having an impact on their work life.

That’s part of the reason we’ve introduced an Employee Assistance Programme. Now our colleagues can call a helpline in confidence at any time of the day or night to discuss any of their issues, their health or their general wellbeing. We hope our investment will help ensure everyone can concentrate on their work, providing the best service possible to our clients, but most importantly enjoy their home life without their problems hanging over them. It’s just one of the many ways we try to look after our colleagues’ wellbeing, which is something we take very seriously.

The saying ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’ is a bit of a cliché, but it’s true in most cases. Our employee assistance programme gives our colleagues a chance to talk on their own terms to help them get the support they need, whatever they are facing.
